4 shallow fuel tanks sit directly on top of floors. Average KG about 60 cms. | Total Capacity about 3,500 litres. Cruising RPM 850 900-mile range. RPM 1500 450 miles. Estimated Genset fuel included. | If we cut out two fuel tanks to make room for lead ingots, the residual range may not be sufficient or safe. |
Gardner engine.
|
Weight 2 tons. KG about 1 metre. | Paul: Given Cariad was designed without an engine, could we consider the Gardner to be ballast? |
Gardner performance.
|
There seems to be some discrepancy as to exact engine HP. Ranges from 175 HP to 240 HP. When we bought the engine from the Gardner people in Bangkok HP was 240. Reportedly with this 8LXB and a 34” diameter prop, RPM 800-1000, flat water speed is about 9 knots. | Source: Alan Pickering – former captain. |
Lead Ingots.
|
Practically speaking, allowing for tankage, piping runs etc. there is only room for about 4 tons. | Paul: If add onn ballast was feasible and if we added 2½” lead to each side of the keel this is about 6 tons. If the Gardner was considered, could we reduce add-on external ballast to 4 tons? |
Internal steel removal in progress. | Engine room bulkheads and steel bench. | Including the “steel box” weight removed so far is about 1,100 Kgs. Some weight will be re-added with the new timber bulkheads and insulation. |
Engine room day tank. | At Tim’s request we are modifying the day tank to double its capacity from 150 litres to 300 litres. | This will require a robust steel frame to which the day tank can be secured. |

ON-SITE BALLAST INCREASE DISCUSSIONS / OPTIONS.
(Cariad is very fine lined which poses difficulty with additional ballast, internal equipment or added machinery or systems.)
GENERAL WORKS
Gardner | Fuel injection pump taken in for computer recalibration. | When re-installed this will complete the Gardner. Remaining only cosmetics. |
Genset | Completed. | Ready for reinstalling and charging service. |
Anchor winch has been removed to engineering workshop. | Good quality HD winch needed overhaul. New 24VDC motor installed and clutch mechanism overhauled. | Whole winch stripped down to ensure longevity of service. |
Varnish work
|
25% completed. | This will mean usual detail work which accompanies any project at the end will enable us to reduce finish time in this department. |
Iron cheek plates | Lower sections cut off. Cheek-plates sandblasted and 4 coats Jotamastic applied. | Ready for planking. |
Clean up and repaint of internal frames. | Progress is good. | We are pushing in certain areas to work in with the planking team. |
