KNOCK-ON EFFECT FROM NEGLECT – RUDDER.

  1. It began with Toredo worms chewing through the rudder.
  2. The worm damage was so extensive we had to rebuild the entire rudder inclusive of shaft, couplings and bearings.
  3. Once reinstalled we had an alignment problem with the 127-year old steering gear. (See photo)
  4. Next was figuring out how to fit an autopilot to a steering gear that was never designed to have one. We settled on the Jefa sprocket drive unit from Denmark.
