CARIAD PROGRESS REPORT #10

REBUILDING Vs. DISMANTLING

17th May 2022.

_________________________________________________________

Milestone week. We’ve turned the corner.

With the exception of the stern knee section, we have stopped dismantling. We look ahead from this point onwards.

For 3 months it was dis-heartening to dismantle work previously done by us, work done with blood, sweat and years, heart, soul and spirit and a lot of money.

The slogan most often heard around the job site …. “What a waste!!!”

The world is running out of good old growth timber. Takian Thong is no exception. Finding sources of good planking, stem and stern timber, is proving to be a challenge, but we are chipping away and slowing accumulating the required timber.

The project is at an interesting stage and there are not many projects like this going on in the world today. Paul, in reading, we look forward to seeing you next Tuesday. In advance we guarantee lively technical discussions throughout your visit.

STEM REPLACEMENT.

Primative but effective.Primative but effective.

TERMITE DAMAGED PLY RENEWED. COMBINED WITH STEEL REFURBISHMENT AND PLANKING OPERATIONS.

Replacing termite eaten ply panels.

MIZZEN MAST PROGRESS

Shaping the mizzen mast.

Final trimming.

BOWSPRIT PATTERN.

There were many small repairs to the bowsprit and it is unknown if there is internal rot. We decided it was easier to build new especially because we have sufficient Douglas Fir. The stresses put on such an important component as the bowsprit was another deciding factor.

INTERNAL STEELWORK

Dirty but much better condition than we thought.
